Remastered double and triple disc deluxe reissues of China Crisis’ first three albums – ‘Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain’, ‘Flaunt the Imperfection’ and ‘Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume 2’ are to be released through Caroline International on 1 December.

‘Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain’ is the debut album from the band and comes in a two-disc format. Originally released in 1982 it spent 17 weeks on the UK Albums Chart. Gary Daly (vocalist/keyboardist) and Eddie Lundon (vocalist/guitarist) made this fascinating and pioneering debut on a low budget, and their magic was obviously already there and produced singles ‘African and White’, “No More Blue Horizons (Fool, Fool, Fool)” and ‘Christian’.

‘Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume 2’ was originally released in 1983 and is the bands second album. To be reissued in a three-disc format, the album spent 16 weeks on the UK Albums Chart spawning the single ‘Wishful Thinking’ which was a top ten hit. The album was seen by many as a progression in sound for the band, working with producer Mike Howlett, their sound is notably toughened up while the melodies shine through.

‘Flaunt the Imperfection’ is the bands third studio album. Originally released in 1985, it was produced by Steely Dan’s Walter Becker and is regarded by many as the band’s seminal album, achieving top 10 success in the UK and contains the hits ‘Black Man Ray’ and ‘King In A Catholic Style’. China Crisis underwent a big change in sound for this album, completely ditching the heavy dub rhythms and challenging arrangements, replacing it with an altogether smoother and less aggressive sound. This comes as a two-disc format.

All three-deluxe versions were remastered from the original tapes and produced with the full co-operation of the band, who also provided new interviews to renowned music journalist Daryl Easlea for the booklet. The sets contain many bonus tracks, BBC Sessions as well as demos, which are all listed below. The booklets contain many rare photos and memorabilia from the time.

China Crisis were a core of Gary Daly (vocalist/keyboardist) and Eddie Lundon (vocalist/guitarist) and formed in 1979. Like fellow Liverpudlians O.M.D., China Crisis began life as a pioneering synthetic duo who performed brilliantly executed pop songs with quirky edges. They seamlessly mixed their love of guitar-based pop with (then) modern musical technology.
